Can I dry fire my 1911 R1? While we would not recommend extensive dry firing of the 1911 R1, occasional dry firing cycles to ensure proper function should not harm the firearm. PLEASE NOTE: Prior to performing any dry firing sequence it is important that you thoroughly check the firearm to ensure the chamber and magazine are completely empty.
The owner's manual for the SR1911 provides:'DRY FIRINGGoing through the actions of cocking, aiming and pulling the trigger on anunloaded gun is known as “dry firing.” It can be useful to learn the “feel” of yourpistol. Be certain that the pistol is fully unloaded (both the chamber andmagazine are empty) and that the pistol is pointing in a safe direction even whenyou are practicing dry firing. The RUGER® SR1911® pistols can be dry-firedwithout damage to the firing pin or other components.' I hear people talk about practicing trigger pull with empty handguns.I have heard it is not good to dry fire 1911's.You must have been somewhere near an 'internet expert'.I had several people tell me that dry firing a 1911 would not hurt anything. At that time my only 1911 was one I had paid $1,700 for, so I was hesitantto try it. Soooo, I bought a very inexpensive one, specifically for dry fire. This was a VERY inexpensive one and the trigger reflected that. Longstory short, after over 8,000 cycles, the very inexpensive one has anexcellent trigger. ZERO other changes/problems.I now have it combined with a upper to have a.45 carbine.Summary: Dryfire in a 1911 is NOT a problem.
